Whimsical Birds Valance

This delightful Whimsical Birds Valance is covered with cute birds sitting on branches and flying through the air. The valance is worked from side to side, with a slight gathering already built in, making it easy to customize the width. The rod pocket, with lacy top border, is also incorporated in the design to fit a 5/8″ or 3/4″ curtain rod.

The valance is shown on a 56″ wide window (typically, a valance should measure about 1-1/2 times the window width to allow for some gathering).

This pattern includes both row-by-row written instructions as well as a design chart for reference.

The filet crochet technique is akin to crocheting a piece of graph paper with some of the square grids filled in and some left open (or blank) to create an overall design. If you’d like to learn filet crochet, check out my YouTube tutorial: Filet Crochet: Learning the Stitches & a Few Extras!

Materials:

  • The model was created using olive cotton crochet thread, size 10, and a size 8 (1.50 mm) steel crochet hook.
  • A 5/8″ to 3/4″ curtain rod to fit the window width is also needed.

Finished Size:

  • 90″ wide x 16″ long from bottom of curtain rod (63″ gathered width at rod pocket)
  • A pattern repeat of 10″ (7″ gathered width at rod pocket) allows for customization in width to fit your window.
