How do you hold your crochet hook?
I don’t believe there is any wrong way! Each person should do what’s most comfortable for them, while keeping tension on the yarn and holding onto the work.
When I was twelve years old, I wanted to learn how to crochet, so my Mom and I sat down and learned together. Since neither of us knew how, we figured it out and taught each other. Over the years, I have worked out a way to hold my crochet hook and yarn that works best for me and thought I would explain what I do in case it’s helpful for someone else!
Both hands and each of my fingers have very specific jobs to do!
Non-Dominant Hand (Left for me):
- I wrap my index finger once for yarn or twice for thread, and use my middle finger, by opening and closing the space, to provide tension.
- My thumb holds the stitch I am working on against my ring and pinkie fingers. As the work grows, my pinkie finger moves to hold the finished work against my palm for support.
- The space between my middle and ring fingers is the working space where I pick up yarn with my crochet hook.
Dominant Hand (Right for me):
- I prefer a pencil grip, holding the hook with my thumb rested on the indented section and my index finger on top of the hook.
- My middle finger also rests against the top of the hook and helps hold the yarn overs (yo) or loops on the hook.
- As the finished work grows, my ring and pinkie fingers hold it against my palm for support.
You can watch this technique in action on my YouTube Channel: How I Hold My Crochet Hook.
I hope this was helpful and you enjoy crocheting as much as I do!
Happy Crocheting!
