Corner-to-Corner & Filet Crochet Hybrid Technique …

Happy National Crochet Month! To celebrate my day on the NatCroMo Blog Tour, March 27th, I thought I would talk about a hybrid crochet technique I like to use to create several of my designs … a combination of corner-to-corner and filet crochet. This technique incorporates the filled blocks and open spaces of filet crochet, while working on the diagonal as in corner-to-corner designs. Since I think of it more as a filet crochet technique, my filled blocks are made with two double crochet stitches, compared to the three double crochet stitches typically used in corner-to-corner designs.

My Vintage Rose Motif Shawl combines this hybrid crochet technique with connect-as-you-go motifs to create three different size shawls, making it perfect for a mother-daughter shawl.

I have also used this crochet technique on several home décor items, such as the Celtic Ribbon Table Set and the Cascading Snowflakes Runner. The design on the Celtic-inspired runner is created with the filled blocks, while the design on the snowflake runner is created by the open spaces. The photographs below show a comparison of the first six rows for each of these patterns. Both table runners include a repeat in the design to customize for your own table length.

This hybrid crochet technique is also perfect for making afghans! I designed a year-long series of monthly-themed baby afghan sets combining this technique with popcorn stitches to enhance the design, as well as adapting the technique in additional ways to achieve different effects!

  • The March of Bunnies Afghan has a more typical filet crochet look of filled blocks and open spaces, with popcorn stitches added for the bunny tails.
  • The popcorn “umbrella” motifs of the April Showers Afghan are worked diagonally, as with corner-to-corner, incorporating a connect-as-you-go border round.
  • The connect-as-you-go motifs of the May Flowers Afghan are worked in the round with a flower in the center and small flowers added at the corners of the motifs.
  • The Ocean Days afghan from the June Fishing Adventure Set is worked straight across in back-and-forth rows from the right to left side, with popcorn stitch boats floating across each panel.

All of these baby afghan sets also include a matching hat or hooded jacket, sized for newborn to twelve months (and an American Girl doll), as well as additional fun accessories!

You can learn this C2C-filet hybrid technique, as well as adding popcorns and working in the round, on my YouTube Channel.

What would you make with this hybrid crochet technique?

Happy Crocheting!
Kathy
